New dramas’ hot streak this fall continues with another full-season order, this time to ABC’s Forever. The network has picked up nine additional episodes of the supernatural crime procedural for a 22-episode freshman season. Forever joins fellow ABC newbies How To Get Away With Murder and Black-ish with its full-season order. New ABC comedy Selfie and Manhattan Love Story have been cancelled.

As a whole, 10 of the 11 new broadcast dramas that premiered at the beginning of the season have received full-season orders, ABC’s HTGAWM and Forever, CBS’ Scorpion, Madam Secretary, NCIS: New Orleans and Stalker, Fox’s Gotham, NBC’s The Mysteries of Laura and the CW’s The Flash and Jane the Virgin. Only Fox’s Red Band Society is still in limbo. (NBC’s Constantine had a late October debut.) Meanwhile, comedies have been struggling, with Black-ish as the only freshman to get a full-season order. NBC’s Marry Me received a partial order for five more episodes, while four new half-hours already have been axed, with more cancellations, including Fox’s Mulaney and CBS’ The McCarthys, likely.

Forever got off to an OK start, posting a rare Week 2 ratings increase. It’s Live+same day ratings have been so-so lately, most recently logging a 1.1 in adults 18-49, but the drama has been a big DVR gainer. In the most recent Live+7 report, Forever had the biggest percent gain among all ABC series, +82%.

ABC’s new thriller drama, ‘Forever‘, kicked off last Tuesday pulling in more than 6.5 million viewers for its premiere episode. This marks as ABC’s second most watched premiere, according to The Futon Critic.

Starring Ioan Gruffudd as medical examiner Dr. Henry Morgan, who is caught up in a tragic train accident causing his death. Interestingly and perhaps the more profound event is that every time he dies after that, his body resurrects in a body of water like nothing has happened. At the onset of the series, Morgan is already living 200 years after the mishap and is already developing a close relationship with Detective Jo Martinez. The character is played by Alana De La Garza who is constantly amused by Morgan’s strategy in solving crimes.

In Episode 3 titled “Fountain of Youth,” while Henry is interested in finding a way to age and die, a wealthy New Yorker invents a special potion to turn back time. The product named Aterna is said to provide long lasting youth, but Henry and his colleagues are only confronted with multiple deaths surrounding the potion. According to a synopsis released by ABC, it turns out that Henry’s dear friend, Abe, is also tempted to try Aterna to counter his debilitating disease of tuberculosis.

Den of Geek explained that the success of ‘Forever‘ stems from its ability to connect with reality through compelling story and extraordinary execution.

Other casts include Donnie Keshawarz as Detective Hanson, Barbara Eve Harris as Lieutenant Marcia Roarke, Judd Hirsch as Abe, Mackenzie Mauzy as Abigail, Lee Tergesen as Hans Koehler, Lorraine Toussaint as Lt. Joanna Reece, Joel David Moore as Lucas Wan and Michael Patrick Crane as a forensic technician.

‘Forever’ airs every Tuesday at 10 pm on ABC.

Some review quotes for Forever,

“Forever” is a fresh and quirky take on the many crime dramas currently on TV. Viewers can’t help but compare Gruffudd’s character to Sherlock Holmes as he remembers minuscule details from years ago and uses his keen sense of observation to put together clues. Intertwined is a tragic love story of Henry’s one love, Abigail (Mackenzie Mauzy), and touching tale of his connection to Abe (Judd Hirsch) – a man who Henry and Abigal had rescued as a baby from a concentration camp. ibtimes.com

The show does have a spark when Henry and a detective named Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza) interact. Both have lost loves in their past, and Jo senses there’s something different about Henry; her efforts to figure out what it is promise to provide some intrigue. And giving Henry a sidekick, Abe, who knows his secret is a nice touch. The actual crimes in the first two episodes, though, feel like the same old same old, immortal medical examiner or not. nytimes.com

Forever isn’t the most exciting new series of the fall (that title probably belongs to The CW’s The Flash) but Gruffudd is incredibly charming in the lead role, and Judd Hirsch’s Abe—a kind of sidekick-y pal of Henry’s who knows the truth about his condition—adds just the right amount of gravitas and sincerity to the premise. Joel David Moore, who works with Henry at the ME’s office, aptly fills the quirky “not in on the secret but will totally learn it soon” role, while De La Garza is sexy and confident as Jo. There’s nothing about Forever that makes it stand out—it’s fairly vanilla—but I think that’s why it works. The series isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is, and maybe that’s all it needs to do. After all, vanilla is still a very enjoyable flavor. tv.com

The mysteries he and Martinez tackle are rather pro forma, but that’s not what tends to keep shows like Castle and Bones on the air season after season. It’s more about enjoying being in the company of these charismatic characters, and there’s strong chemistry between the debonair Gruffudd and the earthy De La Garza. Add the immortality angle, and a nice sinister twist suggesting Morgan may not be the only one of his kind, and you’ve got the makings of a show that could conceivably make it to 200 episodes, if not 200 years. hudson.wickedlocal.com
